As a Hypnotherapist we often meet clients who are suffering from anxiety. A natural response that everyone will feel from time to time. After all no one can avoid routine life situations. We may feel anxious when we need to attend a job interview or swerve for a car that is heading in our direction. For some people it may be the worry that people think badly of them.
So what is anxiety?
It is a response that people have to perceived threats or danger. Anxiety keeps us on edge, highly aware of ourselves and our surroundings. We also become aware of any potential threat to our own security.
Not everyone reacts to an experience in the same way. Not everyone experiences anxiety at the same level. Anxious people may remind themselves of a particularly scary or upsetting event. By imagining the situation repeatedly, their anxiety can run away with them.
Once anxiety starts we may start to feel the physical nature of it. Our heart rate increases, our stomach begins to churn and our breathing becomes faster. These feelings can be uncomfortable and people can end up feeling anxious about being anxious.
In the relaxed setting of the hypnotherapy room during the initial consultation, we explore the brain. We consider the changes that occur in the brain when we are anxious. This helps the client understand the nature of their physical response.
It is said that danger is in the eye of the beholder. This is true, even though the person may be aware of how irrational it is. Logic in this situation can only achieve so much.
The hypnotherapist can provide mental space for self-reflection. In trance, the client can observe perceived threats and relabel them. This allows rational thought to become more acceptable to the mind.
Hypnotherapy is a kind therapy. A comfortable and peaceful experience. Many people say that it feels like they’ve had a few hours sleep. How often do we reassess a situation after sleeping well?
